Landscaping and gardening in Ascona

Headquartered in Ascona we handle gardening, paving and stonework for homes and small plots between the lake and the hills across the Locarnese area.

Near Lake Maggiore slope and exposure alter drainage, wind and planting choices. Not just turf and beds. We look at walkways, thresholds, paving by the garage and how soil settles after groundwork, then align irrigation design with how the parcel actually dries out after rainfall.

We build new beds and renovate existing layouts: terraces, lawns, edging in local stone where it fits, hidden catch basins, fences and retaining dry-stacks when gradients need tying back. With an architect’s package we execute to spec; without one we suggest buildable detailing, seasoned materials where possible and a clear staged schedule.

Since 2011 Nikola Giardini e Figli plans site visits when photos alone are misleading. We favour compact tooling for lanes and tight entrances common to older cores and hillside lots around Brissago, Losone and Ronco sopra Ascona.

On the lake the microclimate shifts within a few kilometres: around the Brissago islands palms, citrus and oleanders thrive, while the terraced slopes toward Ronco and Arcegno call for hardier, wind-aware species. The northerly foehn, when it blows in autumn and winter, quickly dries foliage and tests the ties on hedges and young trees. We factor this into plant selection and pruning timing. In summer movement along the lakeside is constrained by tourist flows and ferries, so we schedule material deliveries and trips to the waste yard in the early morning, leaving roads and access clear once footfall increases.

Garden construction in Ascona

Building a garden in Ascona almost always means working on terraced lots facing Lake Maggiore: the microclimate shifts over a few metres of elevation, with palms, citrus and oleanders holding well in the lower band toward Brissago, and hardier species higher up toward Ronco and Arcegno. Historic cores impose narrow access, so we bring compact equipment and split deliveries into multiple runs rather than a single load. On lake-facing slopes drainage is the priority: bed-layer gradients, catch basins and runoff lines need to be defined before planting, so heavy rain does not undermine freshly finished ground.

Garden maintenance in Ascona

Many Ascona properties are second homes: owners are away for months and the garden needs to be in order on their return. We agree a calendar of regular visits with a photo report after each one, flagging anomalies on plants, irrigation or small works. In spring we open the irrigation system, check controllers and solenoid valves, and in autumn we close the lines before the first frosts. When the foehn blows from the north in autumn and winter it quickly dries foliage and tests the ties on hedges and young trees: we factor this into pruning schedules and post-event checks.

Stone walls in Ascona

Stone walls are part of the terraced garden landscape between Brissago, Ronco and Arcegno: they hold back the slopes that fall toward the lake and define the levels of the garden. When we work inside a historic core we choose local natural stone consistent with existing masonry, so the new section does not clash with the context. We pay attention to back-drainage (gravel, drain pipe, geotextile) so heavy rain in the warm-humid season does not saturate the soil behind the wall. For partial rebuilds we recover, where possible, stones already weathered on site to avoid colour breaks with the rest of the garden.

FAQ — Ascona and neighbouring towns

Do you work beyond Ascona toward Brissago, Locarno or Losone?

Yes. Ascona is our base but crews travel across the Locarnese and the rest of Canton Ticino depending on workload and logistics.

Do you only maintain gardens or also build new terraces and paths?

Both. Seasonal upkeep, redevelopment, lawns, drip or spray irrigation, walkways, masonry walls in stone, fencing and light excavation followed by turf or planting.

How does quoting work?

Send details via form, mail or WhatsApp and we organise a complimentary site visit whenever needed before issuing an itemised estimate. You're not committed until you accept it.

How do you treat heavy clay or very sandy soils by the lakeshore?

We adjust profiles and drainage routes and revisit plant or sod choices so water neither stagnates after storms nor dries out turf roots prematurely.

Do you also look after second-home gardens when owners are away for months?

Yes, it is a common situation in the Locarnese. We agree a calendar of regular visits with a brief report after each one (photos, anything unusual noticed). On request we manage seasonal opening and shutdown of the irrigation system, check timers and run a basic visual inspection of the property, so the garden is ready when owners return.

How do you care for subtropical plants (palms, citrus, oleanders) typical of lakeside properties?

We treat them as an asset worth preserving: for palms we periodically check for signs of red palm weevil and remove dry fronds with clean cuts; for citrus we monitor feeding and winter protection in spots most exposed to the foehn; for oleanders we plan targeted pruning, avoiding heat stress in peak summer. When needed we involve specialists for phytosanitary diagnosis.
