Garden fountains and water features in Ticino

Decorative fountains are part of Ticino's landscape tradition: from rustic courtyards in historic cores to the panoramic gardens of Ascona and Brissago, the water element brings freshness, sound and biodiversity. Nikola Giardini e Figli SAGL designs and installs garden fountains and small water mirrors across the canton of Ticino, handling connections, pumps, lighting and stone finishes directly.
A well-built fountain isn't only an aesthetic choice: it works with the garden. Sizes and finishes are designed in scale with the house and the rest of the green; the basin is sized for the pump's output, not the other way around, to avoid cavitation and noise; and the system is designed from the start to withstand Sopraceneri winter frosts, where a single autumn blow-out mistake can crack the pump or the basin.
Fountain types we build
- Decorative fountains with open basin and submersible pump
- Wall fountains with cascade and lower collection basin
- Low water mirrors for contemporary gardens
- Historic fountains and recovered troughs in rural cores
- Small ornamental ponds with aquatic plants
When does it pay to call a gardener for a fountain?
Common situations include noisy or blocked pumps, water losses from the basin, limescale and algae that mar the stone finishes, or simply the wish to add a new water element to a garden being restyled. A recurring case in the Locarnese is the recovery of old stone fountains in the courtyards of historic cores in Ascona, Ronco and Brissago: granite troughs or serizzo basins that deserve to work again rather than be demolished.
The best time to build a new fountain is spring or early summer: the concrete basin needs curing time before filling, stone finishes work better dry, and pump commissioning is done with the garden in full activity. Seasonal maintenance (limescale cleaning, pump check, filter replacement) on the other hand is quick work that can be concentrated in the milder months.
How a fountain job runs step by step
- 1. Site visit and brief: measure the available area, assess water and electrical supply, define style and dimensions in dialogue with house and garden.
- 2. Basin and foundations: excavate, pour the bottom in reinforced concrete where needed, prepare cable conduits for pump and lighting.
- 3. Stone finishes: clad basin and edge with natural stone (gneiss, serizzo or beola depending on context), taking care of joints and waterproofing.
- 4. Pump and system install: pick the pump for the water head and consumption, install filter and treatment system for limescale and algae, connect low-voltage lighting.
- 5. Commissioning and handover: fill, adjust jet and flow, verify silence and tightness. Hand over instructions for seasonal cleaning and winter shutdown.
What mistakes to avoid when building a fountain
The most expensive mistake is choosing a pump undersized relative to the water head or oversized relative to the basin: the first gives a feeble jet, the second cavitation and noise that ruin the acoustic pleasure of water. Limescale and algae management is often neglected: without proper filtering and treatment, after a few seasons the fountain becomes hard to clean and the stone finishes get stained. The worst mistake in Ticino remains the forgotten autumn blow-out: full pipes that freeze burst; pumps left submerged are ruined. A single winter lapse can compromise an investment of years.
How long does a fountain job typically take?
Times depend on basin size, finish level and site accessibility. A small wall fountain or decorative water mirror is built in 1-2 weeks. A medium-sized decorative fountain with natural stone finishes, lighting and filtering system typically takes 2-4 weeks, distributed between basin pouring and curing, stone laying and system commissioning. Restoring an existing historic fountain — frequent in the Locarnese rural cores — takes 1-2 weeks of more targeted work: pump replacement, restoring displaced stones, sealing, possibly new finish work.
